Olga Achieng makes jewellery and other crafts at TEMAK, using skills she learns at the organization. She uses the money she earns to support herself and her daughter.
Thinking life would be better if she was married, Olga moved in with her partner, but found life became harder. She had two more children, and lost both to sickness. By this time the relationship had turned so bad that Olga had to take her little girl to stay with her grandparents. She was unable to find work and could not support the child herself. Things began to turn around for Olga after a friend suggested she ask TEMAK for help. Olga went to speak to TEMAK’s project coordinator, Mrs. Philomena Mashaka, who taught her how to make paper beads and put necklaces together, so she was able to start earning money. More than this, Olga reports, “TEMAK trains you to be self reliant, and gives you a lot of spiritual feeding. That has really helped me a lot.” She was finally able to move into an apartment and fully care for her daughter herself. Now six, her daughter is happily attending school whilst Olga works at TEMAK. “I really thank God for giving me this opportunity”, Olga concludes. |
