Nineteen year old Victor Juma Opiyo designs and makes many TEMAK crafts, including the metal mobiles, bookmarks, Christmas decorations, jewellery boxes and cards.

He has been working at TEMAK for two years, and says that he enjoys being there and working on the creative projects. The work also enables Victor to support himself and his mother, who was widowed when Victor’s father died three years ago.

Victor was in form three when he lost his father, and was then unable to complete high school due to the family’s financial hardship. Naturally creative, Victor approached TEMAK himself to show the coordinators some crafts he had made and ask for work. This earned Victor the opportunity to make a living and develop his skills at TEMAK.

Since then, TEMAK have also been able to help Victor’s siblings: his older brother also works at TEMAK, and his younger brother, aged 11, attends the on-site primary school.

Victor’s ambition is to one day run his own business in crafts.
