For the last year, fifteen year old Winnie Achieng has come to TEMAK during her school holidays. She has been taught how to make TEMAK’s paper necklaces and to help the women to make the dolls and other crafts. Originally from Bondo, a rural district 50km West of Kisumu, Winnie is a form two student in high school, where she works hard and likes to play football.

Victor: "I enjoy doing creative projects."

Kisii women: Fighting against a harmful tradition

Winnie’s mother came to TEMAK for help last year because she, as a single mother of six children, could not afford to pay Winnie’s school fees. At the time, Winnie had not been able to attend school for four months. TEMAK agreed to help and now pays the annual 23,000KSh (US$290) that makes it possible for Winnie to continue her education.

At the time Winnie came to TEMAK her family’s financial difficulties had already forced her two older siblings to drop out of school and find work. By approaching TEMAK Winnie’s mother managed to avoid this situation for both Winnie and Winnie’s sixteen year old brother, who is now, through TEMAK, undertaking a course in art work.

Asked what she hopes to do in the future, Winnie said “I just want to work hard and get into a good profession.”
