TEMAK Girls Run Magazine
Students at TEMAK's centre at Kisumu's Tom Mboya estate are using newly acquired computer literacy to express criticism, anxiety and gratitude in their in-house magazine.
Titled "Update", the magazine is published in the computer lab. "Update is supposed to give the students a forum for communicating, though most of them feel shy about contributing," says Alice, a former computer tutor in the lab. Update contains stories from individual girls about their experiences and the impact that TEMAK has had on their lives. "Basically TEMAK has uplifted us spiritually, indeed we can call it a "City of Hope" as it's been called," write Pam, Maxy and Joy in Update.
Update magazine has also been used by the girls to share advice. "If your boyfriend boots you, its not the end of everything…, " reads a column in one of the issue.
Update doesn't come out as regularly as it should, but its expected to be produced monthly.
