TEMAK Girls Run Magazine
By Godfrey Kimega
(POSTED: May 2004)

Students at TEMAK's centre at Kisumu's Tom Mboya estate are using newly acquired computer literacy to express criticism, anxiety and gratitude in their in-house magazine.

Titled "Update", the magazine is published in the computer lab. "Update is supposed to give the students a forum for communicating, though most of them feel shy about contributing," says Alice, a former computer tutor in the lab. Update contains stories from individual girls about their experiences and the impact that TEMAK has had on their lives. "Basically TEMAK has uplifted us spiritually, indeed we can call it a "City of Hope" as it's been called," write Pam, Maxy and Joy in Update.

Update magazine has also been used by the girls to share advice. "If your boyfriend boots you, its not the end of everything…, " reads a column in the March 2004 issue.

Update doesn't come out as regularly as it should, but its expected to be produced monthly.

FEEDING THE ORPHANS
A hungry stomach has no ears. TEMAK has learnt that this is a need that must be met for the smooth learning and rehabilitation of the children and girls. Lack of food and proper nutrition contributes to the high drop out rate experienced in many institutions today. How else would you expect a needy child or orphan girl to feed themselves? TEMAK has taken it upon itself to provide a meal a day to the children and girls under our care thanks to support from friends and partners. This quarter we have fed over 250 for a meal a day at the TEMAK centre and the Katolo Orphan programme.

MINISTRY
Morning devotions

There is a place for God every morning at TEMAK. The entire TEMAK family comes before God in prayer. A real experience with God is the beginning of wisdom. The power of God, the eminent, is always seeing us through the day. Signs, miracles and wonders are ever eminent. 35 girls have given their lives to Christ between January and April.
The Wednesday afternoon fellowship has seen 15 girls give their lives to Jesus from January. The Bible study sessions every Monday have proved very successful in terms of building and bringing up the girls and children in the knowledge of God.

GLOBAL CRAFTS
(POSTED: April 2004)

Global crafts is a fair trade organization committed to buying craft made from TEMAK in order to uplift the standard of living of the girls and their children. Global Crafts is proving one of the biggest supporters to TEMAK in this way and, with this support, we have been able to run most of our programmes since their purchases contribute to almost half of our annual budget.

SELLING CRAFT FOR A GOOD CAUSE

(POSTED: April 2004)

Judy Khan and her mother have a heart and a passion to support those in need. They have devoted themselves to selling TEMAK Craft in their small shop in the U.S with all the proceeds coming back to TEMAK and supporting our programmes and projects. During the period between January and April, Judy and her mother have sent to TEMAK a total amount of $ 2,400 and will continue to give every month from the Craft sales.

GIRL CHILD RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS
Hardly do 2 weeks pass before we read in our news dailies that a minor has been raped. Such is the magnitude of the problem that TEMAK has decided to be at the forefront in educating the community, identifying and supporting victims of child rape. Here is a story of one of victims of rape.
