I AM A CRAFTSMAN AT TEMAK

I, Jared James Otieno, was born in Kisumu district in 1977. I did my nursery and lower primary in Manyatta School and later moved to my rural home to complete primary education.

After doing the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (K.C.P.E.), I moved back to Kisumu to join Form 1 in 1994. While in Form 2, my dad fell sick and passed away forcing me to drop out of school because my mother couldn't raise the school fees.

Being the first born in a family of six, I started to move up and down looking for something that I could do and later joined a group of artists in Kibuye Market. With the interest I had in handiwork, I learned how to paint, do wireworks and sign writing.

Right now, with the skills I have, I get support from TEMAK where I sell my craft products. Working with TEMAK has helped me a lot because right now I can:

  • Pay my house rent.
  • Support my younger brothers who are still schooling.
  • Buy my own clothes and some other necessities.
  • I can support my mother who is jobless.
  • Develop my skills by trying out more ideas.
