KATOLO STUDENTS IN CRUCIAL TEST
(POSTED: January 2005)

High school students in Katolo, who have benefited from TEMAK’s education program, sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education last October. This is the final high school exam whose results determine future career prospects for the students as well as university admissions.

HIV/Aids has taken its toll on the village of Katolo and its environs. High death rate has almost wiped out the middle aged generation, leaving multitudes of orphans in the hands of elderly caregivers. Many orphans must interrupt their education to herd cattle or sheep. The girls are more vulnerable: when things become rough, the first person who drops out of school is normally the girl to fend and nurse the sick.

In order to alleviate the situation, TEMAK is paying school fees and issuing uniforms to orphans in the area in order to keep them in school. TEMAK has also helped put up school facilities in a bid to create a conducive learning environment.

TEMAK has decided to be at the forefront in educating the community, identifying and supporting victims of child rape. Here is a story of one of victims of rape.
