VOLUNTEERS FROM ALL OVER
(POSTED: January 2005)
The year 2004 brought us several volunteers from
different parts of the world, all eager to make an impact in the lives of
young women at TEMAK.
Shirley Scott, a US Peace Corps Volunteer, left Kenya in September after two
years of service at TEMAK. The Peace Corps sent another volunteer to take
her place: Alex Adel is a young college graduate whose brief at TEMAK is the
marketing of crafts. He’s also done computers and digital video editing –
skills which will be highly utilized here.
Melanie Smit, from Holland, joined us last August and will be here for a
year. Aged 31, she has traveled across Europe and worked in the U.K for
several years. She intends to mobilize supporters from various organizations
in Europe, especially from her own country. Melanie’s family has been a
great encouragement to her.
From July to August, we had two university students volunteering for the
summer. Rachel Bingham and Catherine Bragon came to TEMAK courtesy of
Tenteleni
International, a U.K. based organization that sends university students
to work mostly in Southern Africa. This was the organization’s first mission
in Kenya.
14 young volunteers from the World Youth International – Australia were in
Katolo last December to assist in putting up the
Katolo Community Centre. Eager to
transform a society through their noble efforts, the team braved mosquito
bites, infections, itches on their bodies, malaria and fatigue. They fetched
water from muddy streams and mixed concrete using wheelbarrows and shovels.
The World Youth International has left behind a village in love with its
work and with the desire to support the needy. A community taught by example
is more receptive than one taught by word of mouth.
