Volunteers Work for Food The couple from Roanoke, USA, were at the TEMAK centre in Kisumu, Kenya, early 2003 and embarked on a mission that would be educative, easy to implement and cost effective. The chicken tiller they built at TEMAK is not just for nutritional support but also a tool for soil management that's easily adaptable by the rural poor.
John and Diane conducted on-the-job training for the children and teen mothers at TEMAK while constructing the tiller and four days it took building the tiller before putting in it five chicken and a cock. After two months, the chicken started laying thus giving much valued eggs that now provide the babies of teen mothers at TEMAK with a nutritious meal everyday. The chicken tiller has been moved from its initial position to the next, leaving a ground fertilized by chicken droppings and ideal for crops. The children tilled the land and planted a green vegetable, kales, which is rich in vitamins and is used to feed the children in our lunch program. The program provides children and girls with a meal a day. The children at TEMAK have learnt a lot in chicken rearing and agriculture from this project since then. You too can get involved in the work of TEMAK. Find out more. |
