Female Genital Mutilation is the brutal chopping away of a young girl's clitoris as a traditional rite of passage. The young girl is declared a woman at the tender age of 8. The rite is practiced by many tribes in Kenya making the little girls vulnerable to untold health repercussions and denying the girl her childhood. Many will drop out of school and opt for early marriage while a number will develop health complications with the possibility of difficult child birth in future. In spite of this, the societies engaging in the practice are blind to the disadvantages of female genital mutilation and seem only to glorify what they regard as culture. Human rights activist Alice and Charles Bratton of Hawaii, USA, running a Christian organization "A Woman's Voice" have been at the forefront in fighting female genital mutilation. A Woman's Voice has financially enabled TEMAK fight this rite for the past 5 years in Kisii and Mt Elgon districts of Kenya.
We are proud of this working relationship that has enabled TEMAK conduct seminars and workshops for girls, group discussions for communities, peaceful demonstrations in the streets, church based seminars through pastors and church workers and the formation of community committees that have formulated several strategies that have been very successful in reducing the prevalence of female circumcision. 2004 Conference strengthens resolve against FGM See Pictures of anti-female genital mutilation campaign in Kisii District. |
